About Me

Lucas Bailey

I’m a father, hobbyist, handyman, and a full-stack systems administrator. I am a lifelong tinkerer who sometimes sits on the toilet backwards just to see how it’s supposed to work.

Why should I listen to you?

If you’re here, I’m going to assume it’s because you asked me too many questions and I gave you a URL in response. Because I’ve answered most of those questions a hundred times already and at this point it was more efficient to do things this way.

As my footer says at the bottom of this page, I’m not an expert. I’m not making any promises that my advice won’t get you injured or killed. The goal of this site is to do 2 things:

  1. Build a portfolio of sites so I can maybe start a business one day, or else keep my infrastructure and web-design skills sharp.
  2. Help someone else the way my friends helped me when I was getting started.

No I’m not qualified to give you advice. I have no certifications to that effect. I’m just a shmuck who lost over 100lbs and changed my life completely. If you want to do the same I can at least tell you how I got started and how to avoid the pitfalls that I have encountered over the last 5 years.

My Story

See that pudgy dude on the left. That was me in 2019. At that time I was 375 lbs, but because I played disc golf occasionally and ate outside during a pandemic, I lied to myself and told myself that I was active. I smoked cigarettes, ate like shit, was always in a bad mood, and couldn’t even rustle up the motivation to clean my house most days.

But I allowed myself to be that way because I had friends who were fatter than me. Comparison is the thief of joy, but it was also a killer opiate for an unmotivated, depressed guy who didn’t realize he was dying slowly.

One day that friend died because, you guessed it, he was fatter than me. I’m not going to spend one more second demonizing the guy, because “There but for the grace of god, go I.”*

One day, all the friends who were concerned about Bunch; “Hey Bunch, we’re going to go walk, wanna come with?” started saying those same things to me.

Writing on the wall time and I can read. Another friend, Jeff, conned me into lifting with him in his garage.

* I’m not religious, but it’s important to remember that you’re closer to dying than you are to being a bodybuilder, closer to being poor than being a billionaire, and closer to catastrophe than success at any given point.

So what do I need to know?

A few things I’ve learned along the way, mostly how not to get hurt, but also a few things about motivation, reason, and what keeps me going at the end of the day.

Plus, you can see my workouts if you want.
